Village of Addyston

The Village of Addyston (pop. 1,000) is located on the Ohio River, ten miles west of downtown Cincinnati. By taking advantage of a great sidewalk system and solid community partnerships, this small community is making big strides toward making healthy living easier for its residents.

In May 2013, Addyston held its grand WeTHRIVE! celebration. The theme, proclaimed on free t-shirts, was “In Addyston WeTHRIVE!” From the hula hoop contest and health screenings to the bicycle rodeo and prize giveaways, healthy fun was had by all. “We cannot thank Commissioner Ingram and the Hamilton County Public Health WeTHRIVE! team enough for planting the seed," said Mayor Dan Pillow. "We hope to nurture it into a perennial lifestyle change in our community.”

How Addyston THRIVES!:
  • Awarded a WeTHRIVE! Mini-Grant in November 2011.
  • Adopted the WeTHRIVE! Community Wellness Resolution on February 7, 2012.
  • Created Walk and Roll Addyston: Paths to Better Health
Five-loop urban trail system covers 12 miles of sidewalks, all wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.
Each loop clearly marked with color-coded signs and mileage markers.
New benches and trash receptacles make the ½ mile to 4½ mile loops user-friendly.
  • Added outdoor exercise equipment and a bike rack in front of the Municipal Building.
  • Signed agreement with Addyston Baptist Church to provide weekly van transportation to the grocery store (four miles away) for seniors and other residents who cannot drive.
  • Sponsors seasonal farmers’ market at Jeff’s Drive Thru.

“We need to make the healthy choice the natural choice. Without WeTHRIVE!, the full picture of this may never have occurred to me. If we had never received a dime from this grant, that revelation would be priceless.”
