Mary Ellen is originally from Silver Spring, Maryland. She has a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Elon University and a master’s in Public Health from The Ohio State University. She lives with her husband, Erik.

As a Senior Health Educator at Hamilton County Public Health, Mary Ellen works with WeTHRIVE! communities, schools, and faith based organizations to create environments where everyone thrives. She also manages the Maternal and Child Health grant from the Ohio Department of Health for Hamilton County. This grant works with child care centers and communities around healthy eating/physical activity and works to reduce the infant mortality rate within the county.

Mary Ellen works with the following WeTHRIVE! communities: Addyston, Anderson, Cheviot, Crosby Township, Deer Park, Elmwood Place, Golf Manor, Lincoln Heights, Lockland, Silverton, and St. Bernard.

Why did you become a Health Educator? “I want the work I do at my job to have a positive impact. I knew I wanted to work in the health/wellness field, but quickly learned that what I really wanted to do was more public health than medicine. I want to help create solutions for communities and create environments that prevent diseases from ever occurring. I wanted to address factors that impact health that may not appear to be health related (housing, jobs, education). I really was drawn to population health and being able to change entire communities instead of working with individuals one on one.”

What do you like most about being a WeTHRIVE! Health Educator? “The moment when people realize they have the power and ability to change their community for the better.”

Fun Fact: Mary Ellen and Erik are newlyweds…they just got married in September!
