How Future Leaders Learning Center THRIVES!:
- WeTHRIVE! Childcare Resolution: Future Leaders adopted the WeTHRIVE! Child Care Resolution in November 2011. By doing so, they strengthened their commitment to provide the children at their center with healthy foods and opportunities to be physically active.
- Daily Physical Activity: At Future Leaders, kids move a lot! They have 30-45 minute active playtime sessions twice daily. Teachers also mix movement into their educational activities throughout the day.
- Healthy Lunch & Snacks: Even before signing the WeTHRIVE! resolution, Future Leaders was serving healthy lunches prepared onsite by a cook. Children and staff eat together family-style and no pork or beef is on the menu. They have recently begun serving more fresh veggies as snacks.
- TV Turn-Off: Older children are allowed to watch television at the end of the day just once per week.
In Their Own Words:
Based on their own experience as busy working moms, Ms. Bedford and Ms. Burnett both agree that day care is often the place where children get their best meal of the day. “When parents see their kids are eating a variety of healthy foods at the center, they are more likely to try those foods at home.”
