Citizen Spotlight: Kendall Norman

Married to Filisha Campbell Norman, PhD. They have four adult “boys” and five adorable grandchildren.

Retired from the 3M Company after 35 years of service. Currently working for Teva Pharmaceuticals, his fourth “job” since retirement.

Lives in Liberty Township. Active member and deacon at Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church (LHMBC) in Woodlawn.

Interesting Fact:
When Mr. Norman was with 3M, his work involved the Apollo Space Program. A Vietnam veteran, Captain Norman was a mission pilot, maintenance officer and test pilot. His military awards include The Distinguished Flying Cross, the Army’s Broken Wing Award, and the Army Commendation Medal.

Making a Difference with WeTHRIVE!:

  • Healthy Cook-Off Winner: Mr. Norman’s Zuchinni Slaw recipe was chosen by celebrity Chef G. Garvin as the winner of the WeTHRIVE! Healthy Cook-Off Competition in November 2011. He came up with the idea when he harvested huge zucchinis from the LHMBC WeTHRIVE! community garden (see photo above).
  • Community Gardener: Mr. Norman grew up in Iowa, where he learned to garden from his father. He is coordinator of LHMBC’s WeTHRIVE! community garden. They grow collard, mustard and turnip greens along with green beans, pole beans, crowder peas, purple peas, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, basil, sage, pumpkins, zucchini, watermelon and more.
  • Master Nutrition Volunteer: Mr. Norman is a graduate of the 7-week series of WeTHRIVE! Do Right! Healthy Eating Train the Trainer classes.
  • WeTHRIVE! Physical Activity: Mr. Norman coordinates the LHMBC “Movement Hour,” 60 minutes of physical activity (walking, dancing, praise zumba-ing) held three times per week.
